Victorian Parlour
The parlour was the 'special' room of the house and because of this it was only used on important occasions such as weddings, christenings, funerals etc. and for special visitors. According to to the 1871 census, even though the foreman who lived in the house had a wife and 11 children, the parlour lay unused most of the time.
It is furnished in the period of the 1890s. All the family’s prized objects would be kept in this room, and they would buy the best that they could afford.
It was a matter of pride with most working class families, that they would try and have one room that was special no matter how little space they had.
We change the furnishings from time to time, but at the moment the notable items on display are the sideboard, the lap desk, candlesticks, table linen and paraffin lamps and an 1880 wedding gown.
